Root Ingress in Drains
Roots cause blockages and long-term damage. Here's how they enter, how to remove them, and how to stop them coming back.

How roots invade drains
Roots exploit cracks, gaps at joints, and porous pipe materials. Moisture and nutrients attract growth into the pipe bore.
Signs of root ingress
- Repeated blockages despite jetting/rodding
- Fine root hairs visible in CCTV surveys
- Poor flow despite cleaning
Removal methods
- Mechanical cutting: blades or rotating heads
- Follow-up jetting: flush debris and regrowth
- CCTV verification: confirms clean bore
Long-term prevention
Drain lining seals joints and cracks. Where collapse is present, excavation may be necessary.
